Packers Slammed for Failure to Sign Veteran QB With Jordan Love Out

The Green Bay Packers are playing with fire as questions about their handling of the quarterback position in Jordan Love's absence are beginning to mount.

Green Bay made the playoffs in 2023 and ostensibly improved over the offseason. But with Love out for the next month, give or take, head coach Matt LaFleur appears content to hand the keys to a Super Bowl-caliber team to third-year QB Malik Willis -- a man with three NFL starts and exactly zero passing touchdowns to his name.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report on Sept. 13 described the Packers' approach as "unbelievable" considering veteran Ryan Tannehill — who held his starting job over Willis with the Tennessee Titans for the better part of two years — remains available.

"Malik Willis couldn't stick as a backup with the Titans and you're telling me he's a better option than Ryan Tannehill in relief of the injured Jordan Love? That's unbelievable," Gagnon wrote . "If Tannehill is willing to join the Packers, the team must bring him in. Of course, it's already too late for Week 2. Maybe they'll sign him to face his former team in Tennessee in Week 3."

A few years back, Tannehill led the Titans to their best stretch of football since the Steve McNair era in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The QB earned Pro Bowl honors and the league's Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2019 on his way to an AFC Championship Game appearance.

Tennessee also made the playoffs in each of the next two campaigns, though failed to capture another postseason victory.

Tannehill lost his starting job to rookie Will Levis following an ankle injury in the middle of last season, which was the final year of Tannehill's $118 million contract. He hit free agency in March and has remained available ever since.
