Concern Grows for Christian McCaffrey After 49ers Practice Update

The San Francisco 49ers shocked the world in Week 1 when they ruled superstar running back Christian McCaffrey out for their season-opener against the New York Jets in their final injury report.

While McCaffrey has been dealing with calf and Achilles injuries, he had maintained that he was going to play in the game. As we all know, that didn't end up happening.

All eyes quickly turned to McCaffrey's Week 2 status, which hasn't seemed to be too positive throughout the week. Sure enough, McCaffrey was not spotted at the 49ers practice on Friday, and it seems like there's a very good chance he won't suit up for the second straight game.

Jordan Mason will handle lead running back duties if McCaffrey can't go, and while he's certainly a viable option to fill-in for the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, his absence from practice indicates his injuries aren't getting better.

There's certainly no reason to rush McCaffrey back, but the more time he misses, the murkier his status for future games becomes.

McCaffrey's Week 2 status will get clarity in the near future, but as of right now, 49ers fans are likely going to be concerned that he could miss several games after their upcoming bout with the Vikings based on his latest practice absence.
