Everyone's Saying the Same Thing About Jordan Mason After 49ers Rule Out Christian McCaffrey

The San Francisco 49ers looked phenomenal in Week 1 as they torched the New York Jets 32-19. Even without Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco was able to control the game with a monstrous rushing attack thanks to backup Jordan Mason.

But head coach Kyle Shanahan received plenty of flack after that game when Mason admitted he learned he was starting on the previous Friday before the Monday night game. Shanahan claimed he did not notify Mason he'd be starting on that Friday and insisted McCaffrey's absence was a game-time decision.

It looks like Shanahan and the 49ers are making sure to avoid another debacle in Week 2. McCaffrey has been listed as questionable all week and reports indicate the superstar running back is officially ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Minnesota Vikings, according to Tom Pelissero of The NFL Network.

McCaffrey is still dealing with a calf/achilles injury. Mason is now expected to start for the 49ers at running back for the second consecutive game. As of now, there is no clear sign as to when McCaffrey will return to the field.

Pelissero also claims the 49ers are "considering" placing McCaffrey on the Inured Reserve . If that's how it plays out, then San Francisco would be without McCaffrey for four weeks, marking a return in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Mason proved to be a reliable running back for the 49ers with McCaffrey out of the picture. During the game against the Jets, Mason finished with 28 attempts for 147 rushing yards, and one touchdown. His 5.2 yards per carry average showed how consistent he was throughout the contest.

Although McCaffrey is a stud, Mason's presence in the backfield gave the 49ers what they needed to control the clock and win the game. Fans across the league tend to agree, as most of them believe San Francisco is just fine without McCaffrey.

"Jordan Mason season," proclaimed one sports fan .

This fan points out the 49ers' roster can handle McCaffrey's absence by stating, "It's not big a deal as people make it seem. 49ers are still dominate."

"Mason can hold it down in the 49ers backfield. Let CMC have the time to get healthy," pleads one fan .

Another fan joked , "I hope Jordan Mason was told he was starting."

"So Jordan Mason playing well DID impact their decision making," believes this sports fan .

Considering the 49ers have one of, if not, the best rosters in the league, it might be smart of the coaching staff to give McCaffrey all the rest he needs. Especially considering how well Mason looked in the season-opener.

McCaffrey will be one to watch in the coming weeks as the 49ers continue to evaluate their star running back. But for now, all eyes are on Mason as he'll be serving as the starting running back in Week 2.
