It’s no secret that Ty Lue shares a special rapport with Doc Rivers, whom he also considers a mentor in many ways. Hence, when offered the head coach role on the Clippers, T-Lue made it a point to discuss the opportunity with its predecessor.

At the time, the Clippers had suffered one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history, blowing a 3-1 lead in the Orlando Bubble. Before the axe could fall on him, Doc felt it was best for him to step down from the position and have a graceful exit.

Looking to hire a new coach, the LAC management decided on T-Lue, who also served as an assistant coach on the team during Doc’s stint. Having some concerns, owing to his relations with Coach Rivers, the former Lakers guard felt it was best to reach out directly.

    Strong endorsement

In 2020, ESPN’s Rachel Nichols had a candid chat with Lue about filling in for someone he looked admired, and the emotions attached to it.

“Oh, it was tough you know. Don’t wanna see anyone lose their job. I couldn’t have taken this job without Doc’s blessings. You know, when the Clippers reached out, I made sure I talk to Doc, and see how he felt about it,” said Lue , further revealing Doc’s response to it.

“He said, ‘Ty, you absolutely have to do it. If you won’t take it somebody else will. If I want anyone to have a job, it would be you.”’

Certainly, a great show of respect from Lue toward his mentor, and not the first time. The former Cavs coach has time and again addressed Rivers as his inspiration.
