In one of the more bizarre reports in recent memory, the Week 3 matchup between the Portland State Vikings and South Dakota Coyotes was canceled due to an outbreak of a disease.

According to insider John Canzano, Portland State was forced to call the game due to an outbreak of Pertussis (whooping cough).

"PSU had players ill on Thursday," Canzano wrote . "They were quarantined. A number of other players were exposed. South Dakota and PSU huddled and canceled the game."

In a statement released by South Dakota, it was revealed that team doctors from both programs decided it was best not to play the game:

"The two programs and their team doctors have been in discussions regarding the situation," explained the statement. "It was determined by Portland State that the game would not be played in the interest of the health of the student-athletes."

Whether or not the game will be rescheduled is unclear. At this time, the programs have yet to comment on anything beyond the fact that Saturday's game is canceled.

The Week 3 meeting was scheduled to take place at Hillsboro Stadium in Portland, Oregon, and was set to kick off at 1:00 PT.

The Coyotes were 17.5-point favorites, according to ESPN .

My family contracted whooping cough about 15 years ago and all my kids were vaccinated and up to date. Including my 2 year old who had recently had the series. My middle school kids got it at school. I was the only one that didn't get it because I was on the z-pack for dental work. When my husband took the kids to the doctor, I demanded that they do a whooping cough test because I saw on the news there was an outbreak on the East Coast. The doctor didn't want to at first because it was an uncomfortable test (same as what we do now for covid tests,) and they just had basic cold symptoms. But I was right! We were the first family in the area to test positive even though we never left the area. When I called the school nurse and told her she was like "oh wow, that would explain why there's so many kids coughing in the halls!" At first there was one person working all three Counties tracking our "case." They checked in with us for six months.
