College Football Powerhouse Benches Starting Quarterback During Dreadful Performance

Davis Warren's run as the Michigan Wolverines' starting quarterback may have come to a disappointing end on Saturday versus Arkansas State. The senior, making his third career start, was benched in the third quarter for junior Alex Orji with a 21-3 lead over the Red Wolves.

Warren came into the game with more interceptions than touchdowns on the season. It was a disastrous first half for the former walk-on, who threw two interceptions before throwing another in the third quarter shortly before being benched. Warren's day is likely finished after completing 11-of-14 passes for 122 yards and the three picks.

It was a surprise when Warren was named the starter after the job was expected to be given to Orji. The former three-star recruit has already made a difference in the game versus Arkansas State, completing his first pass for a touchdown to push Michigan's lead to 28-3 early in the fourth quarter.

It's unclear whether we will see Warren again anytime soon. Turnovers are a killer, and Warren has now thrown six interceptions on the year compared to just two touchdowns. While Orji hasn't shown a lot as a passer yet, he does provide an additional skillset as a ball carrier. That could be a spark for a Michigan offense that has struggled mightily in the post Jim Harbaugh and JJ McCarthy era.

The Wolverines will welcome No. 11 USC to the Big House next week for the Big Ten opener.
