Colt McCoy Under Fire for Commentary During Washington-Washington State Game

While Washington and Washington State are no longer in the same conference, they are still bitter rivals.

The two are facing off at Lumen Field in Seattle and are playing for the first time since Oregon left the Pac-12. On the call for Peacock's coverage of the game is Paul Burmeister and Texas Longhorns legend Colt McCoy.

As we saw with Tom Brady during the first week of NFL action and even during McCoy's debut last week during the Colorado-Nebraska game, the new color commentators have experienced some growing pains. For McCoy, this has carried over to his second college football call.

Early in the first half, McCoy had a couple of blunders that social media is calling him out for, including him questioning if a receiver got two feet down, a rule that doesn't apply to the college level. The other came when he blamed Washington State quarterback John Mateer for not snapping the ball despite the fact the ref was standing over the ball.

Two instances in which fans and analysts alike are letting him hear about online.

"I'm slightly amused by the disconnect between his deadpan delivering and heavy use of adjectives. "That's a big-time play," he says in a tone of voice usually reserved for ordering Uber Eats," wrote one user.

"Also seems to have forgotten you only need to have one foot in bounds for a legal catch in college football," commented another.

"Is Colt McCoy the worst color analyst of all time," asked another.

While McCoy is new to calling college football, he did get a bit of experience on the call for the USFL on NBC in 2023.

Outside of the early mistakes in this game, he was frequently called out during the Colorado-Nebraska game for his lack of energy.

"I need Colt McCoy to get excited about calling this game," wrote ESPN's Damien Woody.

With it being so early in the season, combined with the fact that he is new to calling college football, it feels fair to assume that the 12-year NFL vet needs a bit more practice before he's at the level of someone like Kirk Herbstreit.

He was so busy stroking talking about Bill Belecheck and Pete Carroll's sons all game I'm surprised he was even able to follow the game. Pretty sure he is sleeping with one of them. What a tool
