Joe Burrow Forced to Hold Back Ja’Marr Chase During Heated Exchange With Ref

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Week 2 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals, things got heated.

Bengals star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase hauled in a five-yard catch from quarterback Joe Burrow and was seemingly tackled by his facemask, a would-be 15-yard penalty.

Chase immediately got up signaling for a flag, even getting in a referee's face and walking after him for a few steps. Seeing the event unfolding as the Bengals trailed 23-22 late in regulation, Burrow stepped in to restrain his teammate.

After Chase "went back for a second round," according to Jim Nantz on the CBS broadcast, the official flagged the 24-year-old for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in a loss of 15 yards for his team.

A CBS camera captured Bengals head coach Zac Taylor having words with an emotional Chase on the sideline just a couple of plays later before the Bengals took a 25-23 lead.

Chase had another quiet day on the stat sheet, catching four-of-five targets for only 35 yards.

That followed up a pedestrian performance in Week 1 when the superstar managed only 62 yards on six catches in Cincinnati's home opening loss to the New England Patriots.

A walk-off 51-yard field goal by Harrison Butker gave the Chiefs a 26-25 win. It marked the fifth lead change of the second half.

Burrow dropped to 3-2 all-time against Patrick Mahomes and company.
