The No. 17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish improved to 2-1 on Saturday. They did so in dominant fashion defeating the Purdue Boilermakers , 66-7.

The win caught one college football analyst off guard. ESPN's Greg McElroy shared his thoughts on the performance on his podcast, " Always College Football ."

"Did not anticipate them hanging 66 (points) on the road against Purdue," McElroy shared. "It almost makes the performance last week even less justifiable. I mean, just completely and utterly inexplainable."

The prior performance to which McElroy refers was Notre Dame's 16-14 home loss to No. 23 Northern Illinois .

It's difficult to know what to make of the Irish in light of the upset loss despite impressive wins over Purdue and Texas A&M. McElroy tried to make sense of the team's performance through three games.

"Tremendous bounce back performance from Notre Dame, but it has to honestly almost frustrate you as a Notre Dame fan, to see them play that well this week, that poorly last week, and how well they responded to adversity on the road," McElroy reasoned. "The up and down nature of Notre Dame, there is nothing more frustrating."

The Irish will have a couple of opportunities to change their national perception. The team is set to face the No. 19 Louisville Cardinals on Sept. 28. The next matchup with a currently ranked team would not take place until a season finale against the No. 11 USC Trojans .

Notre Dame looks to stay in the win column against Miami (OH) on Saturday.
