The Oklahoma City Thunder have seemingly found a loophole in stockpiling draft capital, positioning them to continue building for the future as their current status in the league rises. The franchise is likely to dive into championship contention and will compete for the Larry O’Brien for many years to come. As the wins pile up, the Thunder formula will get more attention and will likely be copied.

The Thunder’s impressive collection of assets continues to expand every year. So far, they’ve expertly put to use all that they’ve had at their disposal.

The deepest collection in the league?

Returning for a third year in a row is HoopsHype’s Team Assest Rankings, a list Oklahoma City has topped in each of the previous two years. Where did the team rank in the latest iteration of the rankings?

For the third consecutive year, the Thunder ranked No. 1 on HoopsHype’s list. They edged the Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs for the top spot.

“The youngest team in the league is also one of the best, have one of the world’s best players in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, have him tied in through his prime years to a contract that is small by comparison to other max salaries out there, and still have so many of their outstanding future picks to come to fruition. The gap to the field in these rankings has closed, but in large part, this is merely because the assets are becoming realities, which all assets must do eventually,” the publication wrote .

OKC owns all of their first-round picks, and they have a whopping seven of them. The franchise also owns three first-rounders via swap rights with other teams. Here is a complete look at these picks.

    • Unprotected first-rounder via LA Clippers (2026)
    • Top-4 protected via Houston (2026)
    • Top-10 protected via Utah (2025, top-8 in 2026)
    • Top-14 protected via Miami (2025, unprotected in 2026)
    • Top-6 protected via Philadelphia (2025, top-4 protected in 2026 and 2027)
    • Top-5 protected via Denver (2027, top-5 protected in 2028)
    • Top-5 protected via Denver (2029, if first conveyed in 2027, top-5 protected in 2030 if first conveyed by 2028)
    • LA Clippers (2025 and 2027) [Swap rights]
    • Houston (2025, top-10 protected) [Swap rights]
    • Dallas (2028) [Swap rights]
    • Trade-able first-round picks: 10

Thunder architect Sam Presti has flexed his basketball acumen, especially in recent years with the additions of Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Cason Wallace. He also pulled off a trade for one-time NBA champion and defensive dynamo, Alex Caruso, this past summer without shoveling away a single draft pick. Perhaps no team in decades has seen such a unique combination of existing talent and a wardrobe of shiny assets like the Thunder.

With so much stock at hand, Oklahoma City has supreme flexibility ranging from entertaining various trades to building the league’s most loaded, uninterrupted roster. We’ll see how these dominoes continue to fall with a star-studded 2025 NBA Draft approaching and some pressing front-office decisions soon on the horizon.
