WATCH: Daboll Glares at Reporter After Giants Loss, Job Security Questions

The New York Giants lost the kind of game that gets coaches fired on Sunday.

Week 2 began questionably when kicker Graham Gano popped up on the injury report on Saturday. A day later, he was uncomfortable during warmups, but eventually was cleared to go. New York head coach Brian Daboll opted not to elevate backup kicker Jude McAtamney from the practice squad.

It would cost him and his team the game.

Gano pulled his hamstring on the opening kickoff, and the Giants quickly realized their game plan changed after punter Jamie Gillan missed an extra point. They would fail their pair of two-point conversion attempts and on the final drive failed to convert a fourth down only necessary because of the lack of kicker.

Washington did not score a touchdown. New York scored three. The Commanders won 21-18.

Needless to say, Daboll was going to be asked about his perceived gaffe after the game.

He mentioned that the hamstring was unpredictable. Presumably not related to his groin, Gano was forced to chase down a long return when his second injury popped up. What some may call a lack of preparedness, Daboll seems to have pinned on bad luck.

But the mistakes are mounting, the Giants are 0-2, and Daboll’s job seems less certain than ever.

When asked about his job security by Pat Leonard, he predictably was not thrilled.

“I’ve done this for a long time,” Daboll said. “My focus is on our football team.”

He would give Leonard a noticeable stare after his answer.

But the question wasn’t out of bounds. New York fell flat last year after making the playoffs and a sequel seems to be in order. The Giants had two winnable games to begin the year. They were thoroughly embarrassed at home by a (promising) Minnesota Vikings team, then outplayed Washington only to lose a man down.

If this trend continues, Daboll may not last long enough to pick the quarterback capable of saving his job.

He’s going to get asked about his job security again. Backed against the wall, it’s on Daboll to rekindle faith in his team.
