Wake Forest found themselves outmatched by Lane Kiffin's No. 5 Ole Miss this past Saturday.

The Rebels stormed into Winston-Salem and decimated Wake Forest with a 40-6 victory. This defeat Wake Forest's season record to 1-2, following a narrow loss to Virginia last week.

The primary issue in Wake Forest's consecutive losses has been their defense. Against Ole Miss, the Deacons were powerless as the Rebels amassed 649 total yards with remarkable efficiency, dominating the field at will throughout the game.

Despite Ole Miss boasting one of the top offenses in college football, Wake Forest's defensive struggles were not new; they also had difficulty containing Virginia in Week 2, who racked up 430 yards for a 31-30 victory in Winston-Salem.

Currently, Wake Forest's defense lacks a strong point; although they were solid against Virginia's run, Ole Miss sliced through their defense, rushing for 272 yards on 45 carries. Additionally, Ole Miss achieved 377 passing yards on 34 attempts in an impressively efficient performance.

Apparently, the Demon Deacons had enough of Ole Miss after the game.

The rematch between the two teams scheduled for next year in Oxford, as part of their home-and-home series, has been canceled, reported by Brett McMurphy of Action Network. Wake Forest has agreed to pay Ole Miss $1 million to cancel the upcoming game.

Lane Kiffin also affirmed post-game that the teams will not face each other next season, according to Brad Logan of 247Sports.

“These guys during the week called over and (Wake Forest AD John) Currie said we’re not playing you guys next year and bought out of the game. I thought that was a good message for our players when somebody wanted to pay money not to play them. It says a lot about where our program is right now," Kiffin said.

In 2024, the ACC is highly competitive, with several leading teams exhibiting significant weaknesses during the season's first three weeks. For Wake Forest to be considered among the top of the conference, they must address their defensive shortcomings.
