Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is experiencing a career resurgence, and the key to his revitalization seems clear to at least one former Buccaneer.

In Sunday’s 20-16 win over the Detroit Lions, Mayfield's gritty performance, including two consecutive 11-yard runs, one of which clinched the game-winning touchdown, showcased his renewed form. The victory pushed Tampa Bay to a 2-0 start for the season.

Mayfield completed 12 of 19 passes for 185 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin in the first half of week 2. After the Lions took a 16-13 lead in the second half, Mayfield orchestrated a comeback to secure the victory for his team.

Former Buccaneers Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson offered his perspective on Mayfield’s resurgence following the team's win.

"Right now, Baker’s playing with true confidence, very similar to when he was at Oklahoma," Johnson remarked . "He’s making decisive decisions and throwing the ball with authority. You could just see the jubilation in his celebration after the touchdown against the Lions."

Mayfield’s journey from the Cleveland Browns to backup roles with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams now appears to have found a new chapter in Tampa Bay. His leadership has propelled the Buccaneers to an 11-8 record over his first 19 games, proving to be a fruitful partnership.

Mayfield's resurgence appears to be driven by his fit within the Buccaneers' offensive system, which features dynamic weapons like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The change in offensive coordinators, from Dave Canales to Liam Coen, hasn’t slowed his momentum. Through two weeks, Mayfield ranks among the NFL’s most efficient passers, boasting 474 passing yards, and five touchdowns.

The Buccaneers , buoyed by Mayfield's performance, now prepare to host the winless Denver Broncos (0-2) in Week 3, aiming to continue their winning streak.
