Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich Disrespected in Recent NBA Ranking

    By Jonah Kubicek,

Gregg Popovich has a legitimate case to call himself the greatest basketball coach ever. He has won five titles with the San Antonio Spurs, won more games than anyone else, developed late draft picks into Hall of Fame talent, and made the playoffs 22 years in a row.

The fact that he has only led one franchise is just the icing on the cake.

However, not everyone is convinced that Popovich is still an elite coach. A recent ranking by CBS placed Popovich as the 14 best coach in the league.

Popovich came in behind Mike Brown, Tom Thibodeau, and Ime Udoka, to name a few. Will Hardy of the Utah Jazz, who has not made the playoffs, was several spots ahead of Pop.

Granted, he was listed in a tier of his own, as "the living legend" was crowned the greatest coach of all time.

"Popovich is widely praised -- and justifiably so! -- for the relationships he is able to forge with his players," wrote Sam Quinn. "He's viewed as one of the NBA's best human beings. It's also fair to wonder how many of his tactics worked specifically because he had Duncan and not a more typical superstar."

Popovich is yet to coach a contender in this modern era of basketball, although he still has four seasons left on his contract and Victor Wembanyama on his team, so that could change very soon.

Depending on how good Wembanyama becomes, there is a chance that Popovich will win an NBA title in four different decades, with his first coming in 1999. If that possibility comes true, it's hard to say that he is not the greatest coach in all of professional sports.
