Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers basketball program made an early move by bringing in sophomore Ty Schlagel for an unofficial visit as they begin ramping up their efforts in the 2027 recruiting class.

The versatile 6-foot-5 wing from Cretin Derham Hall in Saint Paul, Minnesota, made his second visit to Madison over the weekend for the Alabama game, and the Badgers coaches didn't let him leave without extending him an offer .

According to On3 , Schlagel holds the top spot in Minnesota for the 2027 class, ranks as the No. 14 shooting guard in the nation, and is listed as the No. 54 overall prospect in the country.

Schlagel, who had an impressive showing on the AAU circuit with Howard Pulley, was eager to take in the Madison atmosphere again.

"I have previously been to Badgers camp, so this was my second time in Madison," Schlagel told AllBadgers . "It's a cool city, and I love that it's by the lake. The fans there are amazing."

Assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft, who has started to form a strong connection with the Minnesota standout, has taken the lead for the Wisconsin men's basketball staff in recruiting Schlagel.

"Coach Krabbenhoft has been my main person so far. He is really nice, and I love that he is from South Dakota near my family," Schlagel noted.

On film, Schlagel shows three-level scoring ability and is a knockdown shooter from beyond the arc. He’s got a natural feel for the game, moves well off the ball, and makes it a point to contribute in ways beyond just scoring up points—something Wisconsin has always valued in its players.

That type of well-rounded foundation has already put Schlagel on the radar of several Big Ten programs and holds early offers from Iowa and Minnesota, in addition to Wisconsin. Not to mention, he's received interest from Washington, Nebraska, Purdue, Indiana, Xavier, and Iowa State.

"Coaches really encouraged me to enjoy high school, it goes by fast. I am looking forward to talking to them more going forward," he said.

While he remains early in his recruitment process, Schlagel has a couple of visits scheduled in October.

The Badgers have put themselves in the early mix for Schlagel, and given Gard’s history of success in recruiting Minnesota talent, they’ll look to stay on the young guard's radar as his recruitment continues.

The Badgers have only extended two known scholarship offers in the 2027 recruiting cycle, one to Schlagel and the other to in-state forward Donovan Davis from Freedom High School.
