Jets Have an Awkward Linebacker Problem

    By Nick Faria,

The New York Jets are in an awkward position right now for their defense.

Not regarding their current lack of edge rushers, the continuing holdout of Haason Reddick, or the fact that their secondary could very well be down to starters going into a short week.

No, the awkward situation the Jets currently find themselves in is at linebacker.

In New York's 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans, New York's defense gave up drives of eight or more plays in the first half and trailed 10-7 due to some busts in coverage and pushback against the run.

Things changed in the second half, though. The Jets gave up just a single scoring drive and forced four three-and-outs. New York looked faster in coverage, and more physical at the point of attack.

The difference? Jamien Sherwood had taken the place of captain C.J. Mosley who was out with a toe injury.

It is not to say that Mosley has been bad throughout his All-Pro career. He recorded three tackles while playing for just around a quarter of football.

Sherwood, though, after some key halftime adjustments, ended up recording a team-high 12 tackles, one pass defended, and a tackle for loss in the run game. He recorded the Jets' highest defensive grade by Pro Football Focus and was the fifth-highest linebacker in Week 2 to this point.

For a team that struggled to control the middle of the field against San Francisco, and early against the Titans, the Jets are now in an awkward position.

Their leader on defense, the player everyone looks up to, is dealing with an injury that usually comes from losing a step. Mosley being 32 years old doesn't help the situation.

Sherwood is faster, more athletic, and is moving at a much more efficient pace.

It was a thought coming into the season regarding what New York would do if their defensive leader had visibly lost a step. It may have happened quicker than expected, but the problem is now finally here.

And New York must now figure out how to play a linebacker who is simply playing better than the leader of the whole unit.
