Jordan Chiles' Bronze Medal Appeal Reveals Major Simone Biles News

Gymnast Jordan Chiles' life has been a rollercoaster over the past month. After helping Team USA win gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Chiles won her first individual medal, a bronze, during the floor competition.

While she initially finished in fifth place, Team USA coach Cecile Landi quickly realized that the 23-year-old's difficulty level was incorrect. The judges agreed and changed Chiles' score from 13.666 to 13.766, cementing her third place finish.

However, following a complaint by Romanian Gymnastics Federation, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) ruled that Landi's inquiry was made four seconds too late and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) reversed Chiles' score.

While USA Gymnastics fought the decision with video evidence that Landi made her inquiry within well within the one-minute window -- the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected it, and awarded Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu the bronze anyway.

However, Chiles' lawyers filed a formal appeal with the Swiss Federal Tribunal, which included a major revelation about Simone Biles and the source of the video.

USA Today's Nancy Armor and Tom Schad reported that the video evidence was submitted by director Katie Walsh, and Religion of Sports, the production company behind Netflix's docuseries, "Simone Biles: Rising," which received special permission to film the competition at Bercy Arena.

Walsh had multiple cameras going as Biles earned the silver medal on the individual floor competition and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade won gold.

In the footage, Landi can be heard yelling, "Inquiry for Jordan!" 49 seconds after she saw Chiles' score. Landi repeats her message twice before the one minute mark is reached, voiding Romania's complaint and refuting CAS' ruling. Landi learned about the footage's existence after Walsh reached out to offer her sympathy over the entire debacle.

The first two episodes of Biles' docuseries premiered before the Olympics started. The release date for the final two episodes has not yet been announced. Should Biles' show provide the irrefutable evidence that brings Chiles her medal back, it will be yet another accolade for the most-decorated gymnast in U.S. history.
