San Antonio Spurs Adding Chris Paul is 'Perfect' for Victor Wembanyama

The San Antonio Spurs had a fairly quiet offseason considering they were involved in trade rumors for Lauri Markkanen, Trae Young, and Brandon Ingram. However, they did add veteran talent in Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes and drafted their point guard of the future in Stephon Castle.

Unsurprisingly, it's Paul, known as "The Point God," who is expected to have the biggest impact on the team and Victor Wembanyama.

Last season, Wembanyama looked like one of the best players in the world when he was playing next to even a capable NBA point guard. The Spurs went out and got him one of the best minds in the game, and an elite table-setter in Paul, even if he is past his prime.

Paul has proven that he can slot into a roster and immediately improve it, as he did with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2020 and the Phoenix Suns in 2021. While the Spurs are still a few pieces away from making a run to the Finals, Paul's presence should bring a lot of improvements to San Antonio.

In a recent article , ESPN's Chris Herring suggested that the Spurs could be the NBA's most improved team this season.

"Paul, 39, should be a perfect pick-and-roll partner for Wembanyama," wrote Herring. "The key question will be whether he can stay healthy. If he can, his tutelage will be extraordinarily meaningful with Wembanyama and the other Spurs youngsters.”

Paul has not appeared in at least 70 games since his run to the Finals in the 2020-21 season. Last year, he played in only 58 games, the second-lowest of his 19-season career.

"His abundant wisdom and skill, plus the growth many expect to see from Wembanyama in his second year, could easily have the Spurs in the hunt for a playoff spot in the loaded West," Herring predicted.

The Spurs won't be looking to make a deep playoff run, but getting their young core valuable postseason experience is a must before they turn into contenders.
