The Athletic's latest NFL quarterback power rankings, released on Tuesday morning , September 17, revealed a major shakeup, with one player making a significant leap.

Patrick Mahomes continues to reign at the top of the list, followed by Josh Allen in second, rookie sensation C.J. Stroud in third, with Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow rounding out the top five.

However, no player made a more dramatic climb than Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, who surged ten spots from 17th to seventh, landing in the top ten after consecutive standout performances in Weeks 1 and 2.

On Sunday, September 15, Murray and the Cardinals dominated the Los Angeles Rams in a commanding 41-10 victory.

Murray turned in an exceptional performance, completing 17-of-21 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns, achieving a perfect passer rating.

He also added 59 rushing yards, reminding fans of his dangerous dual-threat capabilities. This comes after a 2023 season that saw inconsistency, but Murray has bounced back with newfound sharpness.

Through the first two games of the 2024 season, Murray has thrown four touchdowns without committing a single turnover.

His current passer rating of 122.9 is the highest he's had since the 2021 season, when it was 100.6.

A big contributor to Murray's recent success has been rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who, after a quiet debut, broke out with four catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the win against the Rams.

Murray’s next test will be a big one, as the Cardinals face the Detroit Lions on Sunday, September 22, at 4:25 p.m. EDT.

While it’s still early in the season, the Cardinals’ strong performances point to a culture change, and Murray’s rise in the rankings shows he’s ready to lead the team to new heights.
