There might not be a hotter team in college football than the Tennessee Volunteers. They are dominating opponents with an average winning margin of nearly 60 points per game.

The Volunteers' high-powered offense receives a lot of attention, and rightfully so. Tennessee ranks No. 2 in total offense, No. 23 in passing offense, No. 3 in rushing offense and No. 1 in scoring offense. However, the Volunteers' defense has also been crucial to their success. Tennessee ranks No. 2 in total defense, No. 6 in passing defense, No. 4 in rushing defense and No. 3 in scoring defense.

During an appearance on SoonerScoop's YouTube show , ESPN's Paul Finebaum discussed the Volunteers in anticipation of their upcoming game against the Oklahoma Sooners. Finebaum expressed difficulty in imagining anyone stopping Tennessee, but he also suggested that some of their impressive statistics may be "fool's gold."

"It's hard to imagine anything stopping Tennessee right now based on what we've seen, but I think that's a little bit of that is fool's gold," Finebaum said. "NC State was a good team, not a great team. Nico just shredded them. He still made mistakes."

In ESPN's updated Football Power Index , Tennessee is ranked No. 4. Of Tennessee's three opponents, only one is ranked in the top 80. Chattanooga is an FCS school and is not ranked. NC State is ranked No. 76, and Kent State is ranked last at No. 134. For comparison, Oklahoma has faced two teams in the top 70, with one in the top 50.

Tennessee may not have faced strong opponents, but it will have an opportunity to demonstrate how good it is this weekend when it faces the FPI's 14th-ranked team on the road.

Just remember in recent history, Tennessee has put up a bunch of points on other teams as well. The difference is this year. they have a defense; however, a good defense stops a good offense. Look at Tennessee’s offense last year and see what happened to them when UGA went to Neyland stadium and the year before that when they went to Georgia. Paul Finebaum may not be totally incorrect in his analysis.

One reason why NC State is ranked so low now is because Tennessee shredded them and put them there! People like Finebaum are the reason why they were ranked 22nd in the first place when Tennessee played them! Watch what happens to Oklahoma’s ranking after Tennessee shreds them!
