Angel Reese Drops 6-Word Complaint About Sky Coach Teresa Weatherspoon

    By Michael Gallagher,

Expectations for the Chicago Sky were pretty high when the WNBA hit the Olympic break in mid-July.

The team was 10-14, rookie Angel Reese had settled into a groove, and head coach Teresa Weatherspoon had the team primed to make its sixth straight playoff appearance.

Yet, when the second half of the WNBA season resumed, the fire that the Sky had a few weeks prior was gone. Chicago lost 13 of its final 16 games, which included losing streaks of seven and five games, Reese suffered a season-ending injury, and there was speculation that Weatherspoon had lost the locker room.

Despite a growing part of the Sky fanbase calling for Weatherspoon’s job, it appears she’ll be back next season for Year 2, and when the team takes the court, Reese would like to see Weatherspoon make one big change to her coaching philosophy.

“I told coach Spoon, I said, ‘You were too nice this year,’” Reese said during her end-of-season media availability, via Chicago State of Mind. “[Next year] I know she's going to be, like, not meaner, but I think she's going to be more stern on things.

“…I think [next year] I’m going to be more of a vocal leader. I think this year I was a little quiet just because I was a rookie and I wanted to learn and grow.”

Though the Sky squandered away their playoff spot with a dreadful stretch post-Olympics, certainly Weatherspoon wasn’t to blame for everything.

She started the second half of the year behind the 8-ball following a midseason trade of Marina Mabrey, and she had to deal with several injury setbacks including losing Reese for the final six games not having Kamilla Cardoso and leading scorer Chennedy Carter for various stretches as well.

With the nucleus of a solid playoff roster, if Weatherspoon takes Reese’s advice to heart, the Sky could be right back in the postseason in 2025.

The Sky fan base? It’s the WNBA, the league has literally never turned a profit in 24 years of existence. Minor league baseball draws more fans than the WNBA.

She's pissed about the ROTY going to Clark. Who does she think she is, as a rookie, mouthing off about what they should do. Grow up.
