Undefeated College Football Team’s QB Announces Abrupt Departure

UNLV is off to a 3-0 start but will have to play the rest of the season without quarterback Matthew Sluka.

The Rebels' standout dual-threat QB took to social media to announce that he’s played his last game for UNLV.

"I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled,” Sluka posted on X . “Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program."

While not outright saying it, Sluka's departure appears to be linked to NIL issues. Fox Sports Reporter Paloma Villicana — who also hosts the RebZone Sports Show with UNLV coach Barry Odom — reported that Sluka has another deal in the works.

"Per source, UNLV QB Matt Sluka has been approached with more money to transfer," Villicana said .

Sluka has completed 21 of 48 passes this season for 318 yards and six touchdowns. He also leads the Rebels in rushing with 253 yards on 39 carries. Sluka, a senior, previously spent four seasons at FCS Holy Cross.

UNLV is coming off an upset win against Kansas, stunning the Jayhawks 23-20. Sluka rushed for 124 yards in the victory and helped engineer an 18-play, 75-yard game-winning drive for the Rebels, who were 10.5-point underdogs in the matchup.

UNLV opens its Mountain West schedule against Fresno State on Saturday at home.
