The New York Rangers' preseason took a concerning turn when defenseman Ryan Lindgren left Tuesday's 6–4 win over the New York Islanders after suffering an upper-body injury in a fight.

Lindgren got into an altercation with Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield after Mayfield leveled Filip Chytil with a hard open-ice hit, per Mollie Walker of the New York Post .

Lindgren’s bout resulted in an instigator penalty, a penalty for fighting, and most damagingly for the player and the Rangers, an upper-body injury that forced the blueliner out of the game.

The defenseman left the game after just two shifts and did not return to the ice, contrary to Chytil. Artemi Panarin also suffered an injury in the game, making it three overall and two that saw the players left the preseason exhibition for good.

Head coach Peter Laviolette confirmed that both Lindgren and Panarin were still being evaluated right after the game, with the severity of those injuries still unclear.

The potential absence of Lindgren could pose a significant problem for the Rangers, the same as Panarin's.

Lindgren is a key member of the Rangers' top-four defense corps, Lindgren has been a reliable presence for the team over the past five years. Last season, the 25-year-old scored 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 76 regular-season games.

Chytil, whose action with Mayfield fostered Lindgren's retaliation, needed help off the ice and couldn’t put weight on his left leg, sparking concern. Shortly after leaving the ice, however, the center returned to the game and finished the contest.
