MLB Facing Intense Backlash Over Braves-Mets Postponement

Major League Baseball finds itself in a no-win situation with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, just days ahead of the 2024 postseason.

According to NBC News , Hurricane Helene is "expected to be a 'major' hurricane — at least Category 3, or potentially Category 4 — when it reaches Florida’s Big Bend on Thursday."

To account for this, MLB has postponed Wednesday and Thursday's scheduled games in Atlanta between the Braves and Mets and rescheduled a doubleheader on Monday — one day before the start of the Wild Card round.

Adding to the chaos: The Mets and Braves are separated by 1.0 game for the two final NL Wild Card spots , with New York holding a 0.5-game lead as of Wednesday.

Now, the league is facing some intense backlash following its delayed decision.

"MLB moves slowly on matters that require fast, decisive action," The Athletic's David O'Brien wrote . "Hurricane path known 4-5 days ago."

"The weather concerns for this Mets/Braves series could have easily been avoided if @MLB had any clue," WFAN producer Michael Fliegelman wrote on X . "Thursday's game is a makeup from April. It should have been played yesterday on a mutual off day. They could have had an extra day as a cushion. This never had to be a problem."

"Absolute nightmare scenario for MLB," Mets beat writer Ben Yoel said .

"You’re gonna have the Mets travel to Milwaukee, play a weekend series, come BACK to Atlanta Monday, and play a double header the day before playoffs start? Absolute joke," a fan remarked .

Former Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski made his opinion known, too.

First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:10 p.m. ET in Atlanta on Monday.

MLB places controls that I don't care for but I don't think they control hurricanes. What else could they do on such short notice? It really screws the Braves. Sale won't be able to pitch in either game
