NFL Sends Swift Punishment To Saints DT For Illegal Hit On DeVonta Smith: Report

Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson called the New Orleans Saints a dirty team after a hit by defensive tackle Khristian Boyd knocked wide receiver DeVonta Smith out of Sunday's game.

Boyd was not flagged for the hit that knocked off Smith's helmet, but the league took action on Wednesday.

According to Matthew Paras of nola.com, the NFL fined Boyd $4,600 for the illegal hit on Smith.

Per the Eagles injury report released Wednesday, Smith was estimated as a non-participant for their walkthrough practice due to the concussion.

The fine is a harsh lesson for Boyd, who made the illegal hit in just his third career NFL game. The Saints selected him in the sixth round of April's draft. He played college football for Northern Iowa.

On Monday, Saints head coach Dennis Allen defended his locker room from Gardner-Johnson's accusations.

"I'd say our guys play extremely hard, and we're going to compete until the down is over," Allen said , via Katherine Terrell of ESPN. "I don't think we play dirty. I don't think we ever have played dirty. It's not the way we coach it, not the way we teach it, but we do play hard.

The Saints will have an opportunity to showcase their brand on Sunday when they play the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4.
