The Ottawa Senators made a significant upgrade in net when they traded for Linus Ullmark this summer, but questions about the goaltender’s long-term future in Ottawa remain unanswered.

According to TSN’s Chris Johnston, despite the Senators’ high hopes for Ullmark, no substantial contract extension talks have begun between the team and the 31-year-old, who is entering the final seasons of his four-year, $20 million contract .

Johnston reported the news on " Insider Trading" on Tuesday , as transcribed by TSN on its website.

“Even though he is entering that last year and the Senators obviously gave up assets to acquire him, they have not yet started talking substantively about extension talks with Ullmark,” Johnston reported.

The goaltender, who was traded from the Boston Bruins in June in exchange for fellow netminder Joonas Korpisalo , is under contract for the 2024–25 season.

Ullmark's future in Canada’s capital, however, is still unclear as the Senators, led by general manager Steve Staios, appear to be taking a measured approach.

The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun chimed in on the situation between Ullmark and the Senators, confirming that the Sens will give Ullmark time to adjust and see how he performs before diving into extension negotiations.

"GM Steve Staios wants to give Ullmark time to get as excited about the team and city as the organization is already about having him in the fold," LeBrun wrote on Tuesday. "They’re planning to let things breathe a bit before getting down to business."

While no contract talks are underway, Ullmark remains optimistic about Ottawa’s playoff potential and it's fair to assume he wouldn't oppose signing a long-term deal with the franchise.

“Hopefully, going into this season, with some new coaching staff and all that sort of stuff, we can get the ball rolling,” Ullmark told Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com on Aug. 20 . “Once we do that, that's going to be a very dangerous team going forward.”
