The New York Yankees will now look to avoid being swept by the Baltimore Orioles after losing Wednesday’s game 9-7.

Here’s how the Yankees fared in the high-scoring game:

    1. Marcus Stroman’s spot start did not go according to plan.

Nestor Cortes was scheduled to make the start but he was scratched due to a left elbow flexor strain. Stroman was named the starter and he got off to a rough start. He allowed six straight singles to start the game, allowing three Orioles runs to cross home plate. The righty didn’t allow a hit in the second or third inning but then allowed another three hits in the fourth before being pulled from the game. Stroman would ultimately be charged with seven earned runs in 3.1 innings as the Bronx Bombers fell behind big.

    2. Cody Poteet saved the bullpen from being taxed more.

Despite Stroman’s inability to pitch deep into the game, the team only needed four pitchers throughout the game. That’s because Poteet ate 3.1 innings while only allowing one run to score. The Yankees have four more games over the next four days to close out the regular season, making the strength of their bullpen all the more important.

    3. A ninth-inning comeback was too little too late.

The Yankees entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 9-3. Anthony Rizzo led the inning off with a single which was followed by a Gleyber Torres base hit two batters later. Juan Soto drove in the first run of the ninth with another single and Aaron Judge brought everybody home with a three-run homer. The Yankees were unable to do anything more offensively and the game ended 9-7.
