The college football world at large wants the UNLV Rebels to find a way to keep quarterback Matthew Sluka on the team for the story it brings. The Las Vegas community wants to find a way to keep Sluka on the team in order to preserve UNLV's College Football Playoff hopes.

The Rebels appear to have zero interest.

On Friday morning, after Circa Sports Vice President of Operations Mike Palm offered UNLV $100,000 to keep Sluka on the roster, the university issued a statement in response, according to The Action Network .

“We won’t be doing business with the Sluka family again.”

Well, that about says it all.

If you are unfamiliar with how we got here, let me try to sum up the wild and confounding situation for you quickly. Late on Tuesday night, the No. 23 Rebels were notified that Sluka, their quarterback transfer from Holy Cross who led them to an early 3-0 record, would be utilizing his redshirt and sitting out the remainder of the season.

As Sluka tells it, UNLV never made good on a verbal promise of a name, image, and likeness deal that would land him $100,000. As UNLV has told us, nothing in writing has ever confirmed this NIL deal.

All of this led to Sluka stepping away from the team with the intention of transferring to a new program next season. It is a tough loss for UNLV, as Sluka was shining through the first three games, throwing for 318 yards, 6 TDs, and 1 INT through the undefeated start.

With the new College Football Playoff expansion, the Rebels were in a great position to earn the guaranteed playoff spot for a Group of Five conference champion. But Without Sluka, those chances take a big hit.

Keeping the QB around would shore up the Rebels season and keep them in the mix. They've had the opportunity.

The program has made it clear they want no part of the Sluka experience going forward.

If true, he should have gotten a contract. I'm sure the backup is more than excited to replace him.
