Ex-Giants Champion Has Harsh 1-Word Message on Brian Daboll

    By Sean Deveney,

Chris Canty spent four seasons as a member of the New York Giants, which included serving as the starting defensive end for the 2011 team, the bunch whose magical run from 9-7 to a second Super Bowl upset of the mighty Patriots is cemented in Big Blue lore. When he speaks on Giants issues, then, his words have special meaning.

On Friday, after several questionable choices from coach Brian Daboll during New York’s 20-15 loss to the Cowboys—especially his conservative decisions on taking field goals rather than attempting a fourth-down conversion in the first quarter, and again early in the third quarter from the Dallas 3-yard line—Canty was asked by Mike Greenberg on ESPN’s “ Get Up !” to describe Daboll’s status.

    “Toast,” Canty said.

He added: "Brian Daboll is toast."

Daboll has been with the Giants for three seasons , and after starting with a Coach of the Year win for going 9-7-1 and making the playoffs in 2022, his team slipped to 6-11 last year and is now 1-3 in 2024.

Part of the problem for Daboll has been the play of quarterback Daniel Jones, who had a breakthrough season in Daboll’s first year, but was injured for 11 games in 2023 and ineffective for the six that he did play. Jones’s quarterback rating of 80.8 is 23 rd among starters.

Jones is in the second year of a four-year, $160 million contract , but the Giants have an escape clause after this year. Canty was asked whether Daboll or Jones is more likely to return.

“I am going to say Daniel Jones has a better chance of being back than Brian Daboll does,” Canty said.

Canty expanded on the question when speaking on his other ESPN show, “Unsportsmanlike.”

“If I had to choose, one guy stays and one guy goes, it is clear and obvious to me that Daboll goes and Jones stays,” Canty said. “I am not all the way out on Daniel Jones. But 1-3, from what I’ve seen from the Giants, I am pretty much there with Brian Daboll.”
