The Michigan Wolverines welcomed the USC Trojans to the Big Ten with a 27-24 win on the gridiron last weekend, punctuated by a game-winning drive that came mostly on the ground.

Afterward, star USC defensive lineman Keithian "Bear" Alexander announced his intention to redshirt, effectively ending his season. His name has since been removed from the Trojans' depth chart.

On Wednesday, a former Michigan quarterback retweeted news of Alexander's departure from the team, adding fuel to the fire of speculation and opinions surrounding the lineman's announcement.

"We've raised a generation of quitters," former Michigan QB David Cone said on his X account along with the retweet.

Cone's blast against Alexander was viewed nearly 400,000 times as of Friday morning.

It drew a wide range of reactions from fans, including one who identified as a USC backer.

"Go back and watch the tape this season, he has not been playing well," one fan said. "Am I sad to lose depth? Sure. But I want guys that want to be there and if you don't (I) wish you the best of luck in your next venture."

Other fans were in more of a combative mood.

"He had enough of Big Ten (offensive linemen)," another fan wrote.

Another commenter spoke on the systemic situation involving player departures and NIL paydays.

"Everyone crying about these athletes being quitters," the reader said.

"All I see is the true test of an athlete's heart. Who's playing for the love of the game and who's playing for the check. Give me the dudes who get paid and still play not the ones who cry and sit out."

I agree with Cone. Kids who behave this way may find that despite their stars and their ability, no one will want them. No team needs a selfish, “all about me” player. Look how far that got Josh Rosen.
