Spurs' Protege Steve Kerr Celebrates Birthday

Steve Kerr is NBA royalty. During his playing days, he was a journeyman sharpshooter who had his big moments when the lights were brightest. He won five rings during his playing career, three with the Chicago Bulls and two with the San Antonio Spurs.

After his playing career, he worked for TNT as a broadcaster before becoming the general manager of the Phoenix Suns. He is perhaps best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, a role he has held since 2014, where he won an additional four championships.

Kerr played for Gregg Popovich for four seasons, starting in 1998. Like many former players and assistant coaches who worked for Pop, Kerr has built an excellent career of his own. His winning reputation, built with the help of a home-grown star, is very similar to Popovich's likeness.

Much like Pop, Kerr understands that building human, off-court relationships with his players is the key to success. Known as a "players coach," Kerr and Stephen Curry have built a dynasty in the Bay Area.

“He's one of those guys that every player should be so thankful that they even get to be around him because he's the most centered, mature teacher I've been around in a long time, not super highs, not super lows. Class when you win, grace if you lose, and just teaching the game," said Popovich in March when Kerr was extended.

On September 27, Kerr celebrates his 59th birthday. Kerr and his Warriors are gearing up for another season together, although a new cast of characters has taken over in Golden State.
