Notre Dame has found success landing quarterbacks in the transfer portal, and head coach Marcus Freeman could have a new target hitting the portal.

The Fighting Irish have a looming need at quarterback with Riley Leonard a senior, and Tim Healey of USA Today's Fighting Irish Wire suggested that UNLV transfer Matthew Sluka could be the replacement. Sluka announced his decision to take a redshirt year and hit the transfer portal after a reported dispute over an NIL deal.

Healey suggested that Sluka could be a logical target for Notre Dame. Sluka was seen as one of the top transfer portal quarterbacks after leaving Holy Cross last year, ranked No. 3 at the time behind former Mississippi State/Washington quarterback Will Rogers and former USF/Arizona/JMU quarterback Jordan McCloud.

"There’s no sign yet of Sluka’s future moves and no indication he’s heading to the Irish," Healey wrote. "Still, it’s fun to think about since current Fighting Irish starting quarterback Riley Leonard is a senior and will be leaving South Bend at season’s end. Leonard, like Sam Hartman before him, came to the Irish via the transfer portal. Sluka has a year of eligibility left now that he’s taken his redshirt year."
