College Football Star Under Fire For Insensitive Response to Week 5 Game Being Canceled

The App State Mountaineers revealed in a Friday release that the program's Week 5 game against the Liberty Flames would be canceled and not rescheduled.

As explained in the release, the cancellation is due to the impact of Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm that has impacted a handful of states across the Southeast.

One of the cities affected and currently experiencing flooding, among other issues, is Boone, North Carolina, where App State is located.

While the scheduling aspect is likely since the teams can't find another date that works for both, Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter took to social media to lay out a different theory.

In the comment section of an On3 Instagram post relaying the news of the game's cancellation, Salters commented a duck emoji. A post that many people are interpreting as him saying that App State is "ducking" or avoiding the Flames, which has led to many calling out the quarterback for being insensitive to the millions of people affected by the hurricane.

"App has more to worry about [than] simply football. They have over 21k students not to mention faculty and staff. We're talking about not only livelihoods but literal LIVES in the balance. So, yeah focusing on football is not it. We cannot even travel in the NC mountains rn," wrote one fan.

"Have you seen the town? It’s under water. They have bigger fish to fry," added another."

"Liberty hasn't changed... never will," commented another fan.

While Salter may be frustrated that the game is canceled, it is clear that safety is a priority at the moment for the people of Boone.

As it stands right now, the App-State-Liberty game is the lone week 5 FBS game to be canceled.
