Derrick Jones's signing with the LA Clippers is regarded as one of the most impactful moves of the offseason

In an alternate reality, the Los Angeles Clippers’ acquisition of high-flying forward Derrick Jones Jr. would have been noteworthy but hardly impactful. However, the departure of All-Star wingman Paul George from the team left them with a gaping hole at one of the forward positions, and DJJ’s arrival could somewhat mitigate that loss.

    A defensive menace

Jones is a 6-foot-5 forward with nuclear athleticism and a wingspan that resembles an albatross. These physical gifts enable the 24-year-old to cover a ton of ground on defense and act as a menacing presence for any opposing player looking to score. Last season, the former slam dunk champion averaged 0.7 steals and 0.7 blocks per game for the Dallas Mavericks and was pivotal in that team’s run to the NBA Finals.

More than anything, DJJ’s presence will allow the Clippers to lighten the defensive load on superstar Kawhi Leonard, preserving his energy on the offensive end.

“His plasticity on the defensive end, meanwhile, will help soften George's exit. It should also, more importantly, lighten the load placed upon Kawhi Leonard, particularly when combined with the sign-and-trade for Kris Dunn,” Dan Favale wrote .

A lob threat and three-point threat

DJJ’s athleticism will also benefit a Clippers squad that has longed for it in the last few seasons. With James Harden and Kawhi expected to dominate the ball for stretches, Jones’ ability to cut and make himself available as a lob threat will be critical. Additionally, DJJ’s three-point shooting has improved each season, making him a versatile threat that can stretch the floor for his teammates.

“If Jones is able to replicate the modest success he had on catch-and-shoot threes last year—34.8 percent in the regular season; 37.1 percent in the playoffs—the Clippers will have bagged a two-way impact player for a cut rate,” Favale added.

Jones will not raise the Clippers’ ceiling, but he will help keep LA’s other squad competitive enough in the stacked Western Conference.
