Giants Trade Pitch Lands Super Bowl-Winning QB to Replace Daniel Jones

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been better over the past couple of games, though he still appears to be playing for his job on a week-to-week basis.

Jones might already be out if not for the addition of rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers and his superb play through his first four NFL games. That reality, however, begs the question of why not move on from Jones now for a better option -- even if that player is merely a bridge to someone younger and better in 2025?

With that in mind, a possible option for the Giants may be Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Russell Wilson . A calf injury bumped Wilson out of the starting spot ahead of Week 1, and Justin Fields appears clearly to have secured that job in the three weeks since (3-0 as the starter).

Meanwhile, the Giants are 1-3 and head coach Brian Daboll may be coaching for his job in 2025 and beyond. The team has some quality skill players in Nabers and running back Devin Singletary , and has shown fight in single-digit losses to the Washington Commanders in Week 2 and the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football this week.

"Daniel Jones had his first impressive game in over a year in Week 3, but his body of work since the start of the 2023 season (2-7 record, 6 TDs, 8 INTs) still leaves much to be desired," Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report wrote on Wednesday, September 25, while suggesting Zach Wilson as a potential trade target for New York.

Zach Wilson has already shown an inability to lead a talented team in the Big Apple to anything meaningful, as he failed to do so last year with the New York Jets despite quality skill position help and a playoff-caliber defense. He probably isn't the future of any NFL team, so the Giants dealing for him would be nothing but treading water and taking on extra salary.

Russell Wilson, however, is an eight-time Pro Bowler with a Super Bowl ring and nearly 44,000 passing yards to his name -- including 3,000-plus-yard seasons in each of the past two years.

It would take a career renaissance for Wilson, soon to be 36 years old, to catapult the Giants into Super Bowl contention. However, competing for the playoffs isn't out of the realm of possibility for a team that would probably be 2-2 if it had a healthy kicker against Washington.

The Commanders are rebuilding, while the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles look as beatable as they've been in the last several years. With Nabers in the building and a coach in Daboll possibly fighting for his job, a $1.2 million flyer on Wilson seems the least the organization can do to appease its fans and try to do some winning this season.
