Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Calls Out Justin Fields After Loss to Colts

Justin Fields delivered a big performance against the Indianapolis Colts, but Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin wants to see his quarterback play cleaner.

Fields passed for a season-high 312 yards and a score. He added 55 yards on 10 carries and another touchdown. But Fields also fumbled twice — losing one — and was sacked four times.

"I appreciate his fight. But he, and we, were a little bit sloppy at times, too sloppy to comfortably secure victory," Tomlin said after the game.

It's hard to blame Fields after the loss. He helped spark a second-half surge after the Steelers trailed 17-3 at halftime. However, his fumble on Pittsburgh's final drive put the team in a rough spot.

The Colts lost quarterback Anthony Richardson in the first half and 39-year-old Joe Flacco took over. Flacco — the reigning Comeback Player of the Year — finished with 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Steelers will have a decision to make at quarterback soon. Russell Wilson was dubbed the starter before the season but has missed the first four weeks with a calf injury.

Tomlin has not clarified who the official long-term starter will be once Wilson returns to full health.

"I've learned to make (decisions) when it's appropriate, and it's not necessary as we sit here right now. When Russ gets to an appropriate point of health and we have a decision to make. I'll make it and I'll announce it and I'll be really transparent about it," Tomlin said this week. "But until then, I don't care how many ways you guys ask me, I got no intentions of making the decision that's unnecessary at this juncture."

The Steelers are 3-1 and atop the AFC North. They'll host the Dallas Cowboys next week at Acrisure Stadium.
