San Antonio Spurs Ready to Make One More Roster Move?

The San Antonio Spurs are still $25 million under the luxury tax going into the 2024-25 NBA season, which allows them to sign or trade for another solid player to complete their supporting cast.

However, they have 15 players already on guaranteed contracts for the season, so to add another player, they would have to trade away or cut someone, which seems like a drastic measure at this point in the summer.

While the Spurs being at the forefront of a massive roster shakeup seems unlikely, the Silver and Black could, once again, be the third team in a deal.

Earlier this summer, the Spurs traded away RaiQuan Grey for Harrison Barnes and a 2031 pick swap. Barnes is a clear upgrade over Grey, and the Spurs effectively got paid to take him off of the Sacramento Kings' hands to make room for DeMar DeRozan. As stars like Jimmy Butler and Brandon Ingram remain on the trade block, the Spurs could be the third team in a deal to facilitate matching salaries.

The Spurs would have to give up a player in a deal like that, but they have several players making little money this season: Julian Champagnie, Blake Wesley, Malaki Branham, Charles Bassey, Sidy Cissoko, and Sandro Mamukelashvili all fit the bill.

The Spurs seem to have their core set moving forward, but if they can take a draft pick and a player on an expiring deal in return for someone who will hardly crack the rotation, then the team could still be very active in the final part of the offseason.
