Ex-Jets Star Rips Robert Saleh in Aaron Rodgers 'Cadence' Controversy

    By Sean Deveney,

Just two days ago, the Jets were rding high, with two straight wins and an offense that was suddenly clicking. Then came Sunday's miserable Week 4 loss by a 10-9 score to the lowly Broncos, a loss pocked by mistakes, a last-minute missed field goal and the failure to punch in a touchdown on a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

The Jets were whistled for 13 penalties, five of which were offsides. After the game, Jets coach Robert Saleh appeared to be making excuses for his offensive line, suggesting that Rodgers' frequent use of a hard-count cadence--designed to draw the defense offsides--might have to be dialed back.

To which the 40-year-old, 20-season veteran scoffed and said, "That's one way to do it. The other way is to hold them accountable."

While Rodgers did not cover himself in glory with his own performance in the Broncos loss (24-for-42, 225 yards), the postgame consensus was that Saleh and the Jets, ultimately, blew the game.

And on Monday morning, speaking on the ESPN show, "Get Up!" former Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody unloaded on Saleh.

"You go out there, you commit 13 penalties. Thirteen. Five pre-snap, 10 offensive penalties," Woody began .

"You on the 1-yard line on multiple downs and you didn’t put in your 240-pound rookie running back from the 1-damn-yard-line? I mean, what the hell is going on, Robert? And I’m talking Robert Saleh, the head football coach of the New York Jets. This team looked sloppy, they looked inept. What are we doing here?"

That was just the Xs and Os decisions. Saleh's assertion about Rodgers' use of hard cadences especially got Woody fired up.

"This is clearly on coaching, and Aaron Rodgers was freaking right," he said. "The cadence has always been, like a weapon for him. How many times have we seen him use the cadence, draw teams offsides? ... Then you’re gonna come out in the postgame and say, ‘Oh, because our guys can’t stay onside, maybe we shouldn’t even use it?’ I can’t even use the word I want to use right now.

    "BS. Figure it out."
