As the NBA season approaches, the sports world was shaken by tragic news on Monday morning: eight-time NBA All-Star, Naismith Hall of Famer, and NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo has passed away at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Mutombo was more than just an exceptional basketball player; he was a remarkable human being dedicated to helping his home country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo . He focused his efforts on building stability, funding infrastructure, and improving the lives of those in need.

His No. 55 jersey was retired by both the Atlanta Hawks and the Denver Nuggets , and he was a four-time Defensive Player of the Year. Recognized as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Mutombo's passing prompted NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to issue a heartfelt statement on behalf of the league.

"Dikembe Mutomho was simply larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others." Silver said.

Fortunately, he was surrounded by his family and loved ones, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure, particularly for his profound impact both on and off the basketball court as a major ambassador for the sport, both in the U.S. and globally.

From 1991 to 2009, Mutombo poured his heart and soul into basketball, averaging 16.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game over the course of his career.
