Florida State Drops Major D.J. Uiagalelei Update Before Clemson Showdown

The Florida State Seminoles football team is far from where they expected to be six weeks into the season. Sitting at 1-4 after a lopsided loss to their new ACC neighbor, SMU, this season is looking like a wash for Florida State.

The road loss to the Mustangs last Saturday may have been the tipping point for head coach Mike Norvell. Not only was it their fourth loss in five games, but it was also their third ACC conference defeat, dropping them to 1-3 in the conference. Their only win this season came against fellow ACC newcomer California.

The finger-pointing continues to land on starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, who was expected to be a key transfer addition this offseason, filling the shoes of Jordan Travis from last season. However, things have not gone according to plan for the former Clemson and Oregon State signal-caller, and they appear to be heading from bad to worse.

On Monday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Uiagalelei is now listed on Florida State's depth chart as an "or" alongside redshirt freshman Brock Glenn. Glenn made a brief appearance in the final minutes of the game against SMU, attempting four passes but failing to complete any.

With any real season goals now out of reach, aside from a potential bowl game, Norvell seems to be in desperation mode, searching for changes that might spark something on this team.

Uiagalelei's performance through five games has been less than stellar. He’s completed just 53.8% of his passes—the worst in the ACC—throwing for 1,065 yards, with four touchdowns and six interceptions. Those numbers are not enough to win many games, but it's worth noting that he hasn't had much help either. The Seminoles’ offensive line has been shaky at best, allowing Uiagalelei to be sacked 12 times this season, the second-worst mark in the ACC behind Cal's Fernando Mendoza.

Even if Glenn gets the start on Saturday against Clemson, Uiagalelei's former team, he’ll face the same challenges, including poor offensive line protection and dropped passes from his receivers.

Glenn’s only other appearance for the Seminoles was during last year's Orange Bowl loss to Georgia, where he completed just 9 of 26 passes (34.6%) for 139 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
