USOPC Leader Makes Big Jordan Chiles Announcement Amid Olympic Appeal

USA gymnast Jordan Chiles is pulling out all the stops in trying to get back her Olympic bronze medal after it was stripped from her in August by the International Olympic Committee and awarded to Romanian Ana Barbosu.

United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee chief executive officer Sarah Hirshland disclosed on Monday that the organization is behind Chiles full-stop in trying to get her medal back.

She even confirmed the organization has already spoken with the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee about how to resolve the medal dispute in a way that’s fair to both parties.

“We feel an obligation to make sure we get to the truth and the right outcome,” Hirshland said , via USA Today. “So we're going to fight to get there. We've had really constructive conversations with Jordan – and, frankly, with the Romanians. We've had a lot of dialogue with them. And it's a constructive conversation. Of course, everybody's got a vested interest. And the reality is the integrity of the competition is critical to sport, and we want to protect the integrity of competition.”

Chiles has filed three appeals to the Swiss Federal Tribunal over the last two weeks.

The first aims to prove through video evidence that her score inquiry at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the floor exercise was submitted on time.

The second and third have to do with how the Court of Arbitration for Sport botched its ruling back in August and prevented Chiles from having a fair hearing.

Given the video evidence that clearly shows Chiles’ score inquiry was submitted well within the one-minute window put in place by the International Gymnastics Federation to submit such inquiries, there’s a good chance Chiles is successful with at least one of her appeals.

“If we didn't believe that she had earned the medal, we'd be in a different conversation,” Hirshland added. “But we believe she earned that medal, so we're going to ask the courts to look at the evidence again. Don't know that they will or won't, but that's what we're going to try.”
