Julius Randle's wife, Kendra Randle, opened up on what it's like for her husband to be traded for the first time in his NBA career.
Julius Randle was getting ready to begin his eleventh NBA season and sixth with the New York Knicks. However, last Friday, two days before the start of training camp, NBA insider Shams Charania broke news that he was being traded to Minnesota.
Charania reported that the Timberwolves traded star center Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and a first-round pick via the Detroit Pistons.
When fans generally hear of a player being traded, they usually focus on how it affects both teams. What they don't see is what goes on behind the scenes for the player's family.
In a video posted on TikTok, Kendra Randle spoke about what it was like for her family to be traded for the first time. While she claimed it was tough to leave the Big Apple, she admitted they "were so ready to leave New York."
"It has been pretty crazy for our first time and unexpected, and I'm not gonna lie, when we heard Minnesota, it was pretty shocking, although we were so ready to leave New York," she said. "Living in a condo with two kids is so hard. I don't care what anyone says, it was a great experience, but we were already looking to move outside of the city. It was just getting so hard and overwhelming for us because my husband's from Texas, and I'm from Kentucky, and that's just not how we grew up."
Kendra Randle also discussed the timing of the trade. The Randle's are now set to move to another state with no previous warning.
"The timing isn't the easiest because our son already started school," she added. "The hardest part, by far, was telling our seven-year-old that he had to leave his school and friends. The school was incredible, the parents, the boys. He's been so sad all week, and everyone is just so sad that he's leaving. It affects all the kids, the whole family, and they have to uproot their life. As adults, we can deal with it and move on, but for kids, it's really tough."
While Kendra Randle is in Minnesota trying to get situated, all their belongings are being packed up in New York.
"Our stuff is being packed up in New York, and our kids are finishing one last week of school, and I'm here trying to get us a home and schools for them to come to and all of our stuff to come to," Kendra Randle said.
By no means is she complaining about the move, but it's certainly a lot. To wrap up the video, Kendra Randle shared how blessed her family is.
"We're super blessed and can just deal with it and have the means to go and do it," she stated. "I don't really have any complaints. I'm just super grateful for this new chapter for our family."
Julius Randle was drafted seventh overall in the 2014 draft out of Kentucky. After previous stints with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans, he landed with the Knicks.
The power forward has averaged 19.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in his career.
Julius Randle and the Minnesota Timberwolves will open the 2024 NBA preseason on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on NBA TV.
