Lions Trade Pitch Nets Disgruntled $45 Million Pro Bowler

The Detroit Lions enter their Week 5 bye on a two-game winning streak with a 3-1 record, good for second place in the NFC North division.

However, Dan Campbell's squad still has room for improvement. While star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson leads the NFL in sacks (6.5) through four games, no other Detroit pass rusher has more than 1.5 sacks this season.

Overall, the Lions defense ranks 22nd in the NFL in average yards allowed per game (349.0) and 30th in passing yards allowed per game (258.3).

In its Week 5 "NFL Team Needs" roundup , Bleacher Report pitched disgruntled New York Jets pass rusher Haason Reddick as a player Detroit should "add now" via trade to address its defensive shortcomings.

"Marcus Davenport is out for the season, which is a crushing injury for the Lions since he was supposed to be the defense's second edge defender and take some of the pressure off Aidan Hutchinson," B/R's scouting department wrote. "That leaves the cupboard pretty bare, so the front office should see if it can swing a deal with the Jets."

Reddick, 30, is currently in the midst of a contract holdout with the Jets, having yet to play a game for the team after being traded by the Philadelphia Eagles in March. The two-time Pro Bowler signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Eagles in 2022 and has a base salary of $14.2 million this season.

According to Spotrac , Detroit currently has the third-most salary cap space ($40 million) in the NFL, offering ample flexibility to secure Reddick's services.

"While Reddick is looking for a contract extension before hitting the field, Davenport is only on a one-year deal, so the position will be an offseason need for Detroit anyway, B/R added. "This could be a two-birds, one-stone situation in which the organization simultaneously fills an immediate and long-term void."

Reddick has notched a minimum of 11.0 sacks in each of his last four seasons. Over that same time span, the Lions have only had one player record 11.0 sacks or more in a single season: Hutchinson with 11.5 last season.

Maintaining the Lions culture is more important than letting this cancer into the locker room.
