Buccaneers Star's Fiery Take on Loss to Falcons Says It All

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would have still owned the top spot of the NFC South division standings had they successfully repulsed the pesky Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. Instead, the Bucs are down to 3-2 after five games following a 36-30 loss at the hands of Kirk Cousins and company.

The Bucs were smelling victory when veteran linebacker Lavonte David intercepted Cousins’ pass intended for Darnell Mooney with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Tampa Bay was also up by three points at that point. But instead of burning the clock by making plays, the Buccaneers gave the ball back to Atlanta after failing to convert a first down.

That wasted opportunity angered Bucs offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs.

“It sucks," he told reporters in the locker room after the game, per Jenna Laine of ESPN . “I’m pissed. I’m not happy about it. It was right there. They gave it to us. They threw the Lavonte pick and said, ‘Here you go. You guys win.’ And we sh—ed down our leg so… we need to move on.”

The Falcons were able to force overtime after Younghoe Koo drilled a 52-yard field goal. In overtime, Cousins took care of business right away, capping a four-play drive with a pass to KhaDarel Hodge, who took the ball to the house for a game-winning 45-yard touchdown.

Despite Wirf’s frustration, the Bucs’ offense wasn’t especially bad in the game. Baker Mayfield passed for only 180 yards but had three touchdowns and zero interceptions, while Tampa Bay’s ground attack averaged 6.2 yards per carry.
