If Michigan Wants to Defeat Washington, They'll Need to Better Incorporate Alex Orji into the Run Game

It's no secret that Michigan QB Alex Orji has looked less than stellar throughout the first four weeks of this season. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a quick fix for the struggles we've seen from him. The Wolverine's offensive line is a work in progress and leaning too heavily on Colston Loveland has its drawbacks. The more rushes Loveland compiles, the higher the chances of an injury. It would be unwise for the Wolverines to let Loveland get too fatigued this early in the season.

However, there may be an option that could provide a much-needed spark to the Wolverines' struggling offense. It might be wise for offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell to make use of QB draws (when the quarterback takes a three-step drop, then runs vertically), rollouts (when the QB runs to one side of the offensive backfield to pass the ball or take off on a run towards the sidelines), and the tuck and run (often used when a play breaks down).

So far this season, Orji has been used primarily as a rusher, which can make the offense one-dimensional. While their record doesn't show it, the Huskies' defense is smart and will be watching for this. While it's true that Michigan needs to find a balance between their running and passing game, to win on Saturday they'll need more rushing attempts from Orji.

Over the last 4 weeks, Michigan's offense has been boom-and-bust, demonstrating inconsistency with big runs but difficulty moving the ball through the air. Some say that Michigan should try to pound the ball with Orji, Edwards, Mullings, Bredeson, and Loveland, while mixing in some play action passes, but this strategy will undoubtedly put huge pressure on Michigan's center and guards. In order for Michigan to win, they'll need to try out some inventive rushing plays with Orji. The offensive line will need to be solid and the TE and tackles will have to perform at a high level. Michigan will need to build a solid foundation with their offensive line.

So far this season, Orji has 33 carries for 113 yards and no touchdowns, averaging a career-low 3.5 yards per carry. He has rushed 22 times for 55 yards (2.5 ypc) in his two starts. In order for Michigan to win this Saturday, Orji will need to improve his rushing performance. Michigan has struggled to convert on 3rd and 4th down attempts through the air. Going up against the huskies stellar defensive back field, it will be wise for Michigan to get inventive on the ground.
