NFL GM Predicts Chiefs Will Trade for $72 Million Jaguars Star

    By Sean Deveney,

There's little doubt, as the NFL heads into Week 5 and the league's trading deadline looms a month away, that the Chiefs will be active on the market. They've already lost receiver Hollywood Brown, likely for the entire regular season, with a shoulder injury and fellow receiver Rashee Rice is now out with a knee injury.

They've been mentioned in longshot trade pursuits of Dolphins star Tyreek Hill and Raiders star Davante Adams. More likely, though, the Chiefs will find a quality underused veteran who can fit their need for versatility.

In writing about the many wide receivers who could be on the trade market this month, Washington Post NFL insider Jason La Canfora spoke with a general manager who had a pretty specific view on what the Chiefs might do.

“They’re going to add a receiver before the deadline, for sure,” the GM told La Canfora. “I think it’s going to be Christian Kirk. He just looks like an Andy Reid receiver. He really fits what they do.”

Kirk has been in the NFL for seven seasons, the last three with Jacksonville, after he signed a four-year, $72 million contract to join the team in 2022. He has been a consistent receiving threat throughout his career, and recorded 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns in his first season with the Jaguars.

Kirk missed five games with injuries last year, and has had a slow start to this season, with 17 catches and 169 yards in four games. But the Jaguars as a whole are off to a wretched start at 0-4, the only winless team in the league.

Jacksonville is, naturally, hesitant to get into a fire sale situation, but if the skid continues, it makes sense to deal veterans for future assets. If that means Kirk comes available, the Chiefs stand to benefit.

As a Chiefs fan my only ❓ is how does he fit...with the limited cap space they have available? Anyone? 🤔
