Bronny James Nearly Matches Miami Heat Legend's Record in Debut

There is more media focus on Bronny James coming into the league than there has been on most first picks in history. That is understandable, considering he is LeBron James' son and both of them will be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers next season.

There has been a lot of discussion around the Lakers' decision to draft Bronny with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Bronny did not have a standout college career and many believe that he is not ready to play in the NBA. Now, it is up to him to prove the critics wrong.

Bronny did show flashes of quality in his preseason debut for the Lakers and nearly matched Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade's record.

Broony played 16 minutes in his preseason debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves and finished with 2 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound and 3 blocks.

The only guard to record more blocks in their preseason debut was Dwyane Wade, with 4 back in 2003.

Of course, LeBron and Wade played together for four seasons for the Heat, winning two Championships together.

They would later team up together for the Cleveland Cavaliers as well but by then, Wade was in the twilight of his career.

In the grand scheme of things, that stat does not show a lot about Bronny's game. There are clearly many areas where he needs to improve if he is to make it in the league.

JJ Redick seemed impressed with what he saw from the Lakers rookie though. According to NBA's website , the head coach said: "I liked what I saw from Bronny.

"Truthfully, he’s so easy to coach, and he’s got great soul and a great energy about him. I like being around him. I’m rooting for him. He’s a good player that we’re happy to have in our program."

When looking at Bronny's game, perhaps it is important to remember that he was the 55th pick in a weak draft class. He might be LeBron's son but that is no guarantee of success in the NBA.
