Packers Coach Tiptoes Around Locker Room Drama With Starter

The Green Bay Packers survived their Week 5 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams to improve to 3-2 on the season. Quarterback Jordan Love and the offense were able to overcome a sloppy first half (that included a pick-six) to win 24-19 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Love's top target against the Rams was second-year tight end Tucker Kraft, who accounted for 88 receiving yards of the star quarterback's 224 passing yards. Love was without his second-leading receiver entering Week 5, as the Packers suspended Romeo Doubs before Sunday's contest in his hometown of Los Angeles, California.

Doubs was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. He reportedly missed practice leading up to the game against the Rams because he was upset with his duties in the offense.

Following the Packers' win on Sunday, head coach Matt LaFleur told the media that he would meet with Doubs on Monday. He tiptoed around the issue with the receiver and said he was hopeful the 2022 fourth-round pick would be receptive to returning to practice this week.

LaFleur left open the possibility Doubs might not return to the Packers in the near future.

“I’m looking forward to our conversation tomorrow,” LaFleur said . “I fully anticipate him coming back and I’m hopeful he will come back and get ready to work. Distractions happen in the National Football League. Distractions happen in life, and you’ve got to do your best to just focus on the task at hand, and I thought our guys did a pretty good job of that.”

Doubs started the first four games of the season. The former Nevada receiver has 12 receptions on 20 targets for 169 yards so far in 2024. He has not caught a touchdown pass entering Week 6.

If the meeting with LaFleur goes well on Monday, Doubs could be catching passes in the Packers Week 6 matchup at Lambeau Field against the 2-3 Arizona Cardinals.
