The Dallas Cowboys overcame a series of miscues and penalties to secure a thrilling 20-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the fourth quarter on "Sunday Night Football'' in NFL Week 5. ... and one that "America's Team'' will now use as one of those "hang-your-hat-on'' efforts.

After a hard-fought game filled with challenges, Dak Prescott delivered the crucial play, connecting with wide receiver Jalen Tolbert for a 4-yard touchdown to put Dallas ahead with just 20 seconds left on the clock.

How did they get there after all the "ups and downs and ebbs and flows,'' as Dak would later put it?

"We talk about being neutral, about being resilient,'' Prescott said. "We know who we are. ... this is a great example (of that).''

Is it? Do we? Is this a "statement'' game? Hey, what they are is 3-2. ... with a road win against a stout foe. And that is going to have to be "great'' enough.

Facing a 17-13 deficit after a Steelers touchdown drive late in the game, the Cowboys started their final drive at their own 30-yard line. Prescott methodically moved the offense down the field, with key contributions from running back Rico Dowdle, who hit a career-high 89 rushing yards during the drive, and tight end Jake Ferguson, who hauled in a critical 10-yard catch on 3rd-and-9 to keep the drive alive.

Prescott’s pass to fullback Hunter Luepke brought the Cowboys to the Steelers’ 3-yard line, and after a brief replay review and a near-disaster fumble, Dallas faced 3rd-and-goal from the Steelers’ 4-yard line. On 4th-and-goal, with the game on the line, Prescott found Tolbert in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

The Cowboys overcame 11 penalties for 87 yards, a blocked field goal, and multiple turnovers to secure the win. Prescott finished with 352 passing yards and two touchdowns despite two interceptions and a fumble. ... and got big help from Jalen Tolbert and Rico Dowdle. (See below).Dallas’ defense also stepped up, limiting Pittsburgh to just 233 total yards.

With the late-game heroics, Dallas moves forward with momentum as the team looks to clean up its mistakes and build on this clutch performance. Cowboys now sit second in the NFC East at 3-2 behind the 4-1 Washington Commanders as they prepare to face the Detroit Lions in their Week 6 matchup. ... maybe believing that winning - in whatever way - is "who they are.''
