College football just had its most upset-packed weekend in years, and the Group of 5 was not immune.
UNLV, the No. 1 team in the Group of 5 Coaches Poll just two weeks ago , dropped its first game on Friday night, a 44-41 overtime thriller to Syracuse . James Madison, last week’s No. 3 team, dropped its first game to upstart Louisiana Monroe, 21-19. Bryan Vincent’s Warhawks are now 4-1 (2-0 in Sun Belt), and off to their best start since making the move up to FBS play in 1994. They make their Group of 5 Coaches Poll debut this week, coming in at No. 14 and bumping Fresno State out of the top 15.
Navy moved to 5-0 with its 34-7 rivalry win over Air Force, while undefeated Army beat Tulsa 49-7. The two service academies are now both 5-0 for the first time since 1945, and could be on a collision course for back-to-back games in the AAC championship and Army-Navy Game.
Boise State (4-1) remains atop the poll, after another dominant offensive performance in a 62-30 win over Utah State. Ashton Jeanty, the Broncos’ Heisman hopeful at running back, had 186 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries, all in the first half. The coaches voted Boise State as the unanimous No. 1 team in the poll this week.
Every coach from the AAC, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt will have the opportunity to rank the top G5 schools each week. Voting will remain anonymous during the season.
